One area that has become very popular is the use of lithium-ion batteries on motorcycles, dirt bikes, and ATVs, especially vintage restoration projects. Lith-ion batteries are not always compatible with an OEM (or OEM-style) rectifier/regulator. A rec/reg that is designed to produce a voltage of 14.5 volts DC (Vdc) across the battery terminals works great with a lead-acid battery. However, that same regulator may exceed the design parameters of a lithium-ion battery in regard to its charging voltage.

Rick finally came up with a solution & we’re happy to offer it to our customers. We consulted with the experts at OptiMate to fill a void in the market: a rectifier/regulator that will work WITH lith-ion batteries without damaging them. Because lithium-ion batteries rely on different internal designs than conventional lead-acid batteries, their voltage set points are often below standard lead-acid batteries. Rick’s new line of rec/regs will charge at a lower voltage without sacrificing overall performance, making them an ideal match to the lithium-ion batteries. This is huge in the vintage restoration market for custom builds! Most builders want to use a lithium-ion battery for these bikes because it’s an ideal solution for getting an old bike running with modern electrical gear. Another benefit of lithium ion batteries is their compact size & weight – perfect for café racer mods or custom vintage builds.

There are many possibilities of how a lithium-ion battery can be a terrific addition to a motorcycle build, or a mod to a bike. To keep those batteries charged will require a rectifier regulator, just like any other battery. But you need one that’s compatible and Rick’s new line of rec/regs are made for just this purpose. Like all of Rick’s products (excluding CDI boxes) these rec/regs carry a full 1-year replacement warranty, and Rick’s support staff is always available to assist you with questions you may have. Below is the current list we have for the vintage market. These parts are already available on our website & through our many distributors, and we’re continually adding new products. So if you have a machine we don’t currently list a part for, email us at info@ricksmotorsportelectrics.com and we’ll do our best to help!

Part#: 14-100 MSRP: $118.95
*this is an upgraded combination unit that replaces both the rectifier & regulator
What it Fits: 1972-1974 CB350F Supersport, 1975-1977 CB400F, 1971-1973 CB500K, 1974-1977
CB550F, 1974-1978 CB550K, 1975-1978 CB750F Supersport, 1969-1978 CB750K SOHC

Part#: 14-101 MSRP: $133.95
*this is an upgraded combination unit that replaces both the rectifier & regulator
What it Fits: 1975-1979 GL1000 Goldwing

Part#: 14-103 MSRP: $108.95
What it Fits: 1980-1982 CB750C, 1979-1982 Custom CB750F Supersport, 1979-1982 CB750K,
1979 CB750L Limited 1979, 1982-1983 CB750SC Nighthawk, 1980-1982 CB900C Custom, 1981-
1982 CB900F Supersport, 1983 CB1000C Custom 1983, 1983 CB1100F Super Sport 1983

Part#: 14-109 MSRP: $133.95
What it Fits: 1981-1982 CM200T Twin Star, 1978-1981 CB400T Hawk, 1979-1981 CM400A
Automatic, 1981 CM400C Custom, 1980-1981 CM400E 1980-1981, 1979-1981 CM400T, 1982-
1983 CB450SC Nighthawk, 1985-1986 CB450SC Nighthawk, 1982 CB450T Hawk, 1982-1983
CM450A Automatic, 1982 CM450C Custom, 1982-1983 CM450E, 1982-1983 FT500 Ascot

Part#: 14-117 MSRP: $133.95
This rec/reg is a direct plug in but it does have slightly different dimensions than the OE rec-reg;
the dimensions are 3 1/2 ” x 3 1/2″ x 1″
What it Fits: 1978-1981 CX500

Part#: 14-133 MSRP: $108.95
What it Fits: 1979-1982 CBX1000

Part#: 14-135H MSRP: $133.95
*this is a Hot Shot Series upgraded combination unit that replaces both the rectifier &
regulator, designed to work with the OE stator.
